Project #3 Lesson Plans

LESSON PLANS

Learning Activity #1

As students are getting prepared to enter the real world they are going to have a rude awakening unless taught properly how to budget the money they will be working for. It is our goal to help them learn now so that when the realities of living on their own will be upon them, they will be able to make it without getting into too much debt.

For this activity, you will have students research what their living expenses will be when they go to the college of their choosing. The following list is a sample of things that the students should look into:

1. College tuition

2. Housing

3. Books

4. Food

5. Car/gas

6. Phone bill

7. Entertainment

8. Insurance

9. Utilities

10. Unexpected costs

As the students are looking into these areas have they give a detailed account of any other expenses they may encounter. The goal is to make this as realistic as possible. Foe example:

1. College tuition

a. If a student is attending BYU then their tuition would be $2,145. Plus in addition to that there is a cost for fees. So in addition to the $2,145 the student should anticipate about $100 for fees.

2. Housing

a. Have the students after they have picked a college figure out how much it would be to live in the dorms.

*Some students may choose to live at home and attend school near there. If this is the case, invite them to look into how much transportation costs will be (just make it as realistic as you can for them).

Last but most importantly is to have the students list all of their income that they have now (i.e. in savings) plus look for a job that they would want in college and to list what their wage would be. This may also include what the parents will help with or scholarships the students may get.

Learning Activity #2

With the information about expenses that the students have just gathered it is now time to learn how to make due with the money that we have and learn how to budget it accordingly. We want the students to see what it will take to get through school and the importance of budgeting the money you have.

At http://financialplan.about.com/od/moneyandcollegestudents/l/blcollbudget.htm you will find a budget worksheet that the students can print off and figure out how easy it really is to budget their money…well at least how easy it is to write it down. Some of the areas will not work for the students because they may not necessarily have a need for all of them. If that is the case have the students white it out and write in a description of something more realistic to them.

Once they have completed the project invite them to start implementing it into their own lives. Have they create a real budgeting system. Some students may like the filing folder approach. Others may prefer if they have a bank account to just do it write on-line. Let them chose something that will be beneficial to them.

The evaluation of the assignment comes in three different parts. Before talking to the students about budgeting ask them to write down what they are doing now with the money they are earning or getting. The answers may surprise you but it will also probably surprise the students to as they really think about where all their money is going. Once you have talked to the students about budgeting and creating a way to manage their finances invite them to write about how they will implement the teachings. Then at the end of the unit (after the budget on paper has been created as well as the system they will use) invite the students to write about what their ideas of budgeting are now. Have them tell you what some of the things they have learned. This evaluation will help the students really begin to put into words their concerns or their excitements.

Entertainment: $30 per month

Miscellaneous expenses: $50

Next we will input the information into the correct spot. The things listed above will go into the monthly budget if there is a per month next to it but if it says per semester place it in the semester budget.

As we can see we are in the hole in both areas. Students are then as the month goes on they will see what they actually have done and can then adjust the budget accordingly. Right now though it gives students a sense that life is going to be expensive but it is worth it to accomplish the goals and ambitions they have for themselves. Through careful planning they can use the budget system wisely and effectively.

FINAL POST--Reflection on class

I have to admit that this has been one of my favorite and also one of my most stressful classes this semester. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the learning and experiences that I have gained over the course of this semester. I do think that I will be able to take everything that I have learned and apply it in the classroom. I have really seen how technology can just make things come to life. I have loved learning about blogs. I have never gotten into them before this class. I feel that they are a great way to be able to communicate with teachers as well as the students or parents. It has been a useful resource.

As far as being my most stressful class...I feel that for being a one credit course I had some far more time demanding projects than my three or four credit class. I loved each of them but they sure did take a lot of time. Other than that I really LOVED the class and learned a great deal not only from the professor, Ben McMurray but also from the students. THANK YOU!

Project #3 Reflection

As I have taken the time to now write some lesson plans and to use the budgeting software I am aware at how much effort it takes to be a teacher. You want to plan meaningful activities that will help the students feel as though they are gaining something not just going to be saying, "When am I ever going to use this." I believe that learning to use a budgeting system is something that can only benefit each of us. I have never considered using a budgeting system like the software that I found. My idea was just a filing system but actually being able to see the numbers in black and white really helped me to see where I personally could be doing better. I thoroughly enjoyed this project because it helped me learn different things.

Skype

For the assignment this week I did something that I have never done before. I talked with my good friend via Skype. It was a ton of fun because we hardly ever see each other so it was nice to talk and see each other at the same time. Although I still like talking face to face this was a GREAT alternative if you are far away from the person. I throughly enjoyed the project.

Project #2 topic

In thinking about this new project I believe that I am going to talk about the family and roles in the family. As a FACS education teacher that is actually one aspect that I truly love to study and learn about. There are plenty of ideas out there to make it a fun and meaningful project.

I am excited to make it a multimedia project for the fact that I typically get scared when it comes to multimedia. I don't understand it so I shy away from it. This will give me a chance to really find out and learn about different mediums within the technology world.

Collaborating

This weeks assignments had to do with collaborating. To be quite honest before now I hadn't thought a lot about the importance of others in my teaching experience. Now my mind has been made up. It is quite important to use others for ideas and even for support. There is so much out there that makes it easy to share ideas and to learn from one another. I have been looking at other websites and blogs about FACS and I must say I have a lot that I must learn yet I know that there are others who are willing to help. I am quite excited to get into the classroom and to use all these new ideas.

Project #1

For my class project I created a family blog. A place where my family can all stay up to date on what is going on with us. I have a brother out in the mission field and he LOVES having one place where he can go to hear what is going on in the family. It was a ton of fun putting everything together. I actually really enjoyed this project. I look forward to updating it all the time. Now I am excited to start teaching so I can put one together for my class. There is so much that I never knew that I could do. What fun!!! I think I may have an addiction though.

Social Networking

As I think of social networking I start to think of many blessing that come with the idea. In my own extended family I have many cousins who are far away. We stay close with blogs, email, facebook...etc. For my class project I am creating a blog for my own personal family so that we can stay close together. We can catch up on birthdays, events, births...etc. I can see many great things. With a brother serving a mission in Poland it makes it easier to stay close to him with email. I couldn't imagine what it would have been like with just paper and pen and weeks between those letters. Social networking truly is a blessing yet we all know the dangers it can also bring.
